Promoting Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism
The Major Winfield Scott Chapter, NSDAR, strives to fulfill the objectives of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Each year, we choose service projects our chapter members can perform together or separately. We also attend patriotic events and encourage our members to perform community service.
With many service-oriented opportunities in DAR, our members can find meaningful activities to choose from that further these objectives. If you are interested in joining us or learning more about DAR membership, contact us for information on our meeting dates and location.
Historic Preservation
Our chapter honors historical events each year. Each February we supply refreshments for over 100 people attending the yearly celebration of Major Winfield Scott’s birthday. This takes place in front of The Little Red School House, now the Scottsdale Historical Society, an historical site that was marked by our chapter. We also purchased a bench for the Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen and served refreshments during the dedication. Other areas of support include finding unnoticed historical locations in Scottsdale in which we photograph and research their history and publish an article in each month’s newsletter, The Scott’s Flyer.
Education
The Major Winfield Scott Chapter engaged in many activities to support schools in Arizona. We started close to home by supporting Hirsch Academy School, which services children and families in need in Scottsdale, Arizona. The chapter donated class sets of student novels and white boards to help students better engage in the classroom. Additionally, we made a large donation of frozen turkeys that were given out at their annual Turkey Trot. We also had the privilege of supporting the Rice Intermediate School on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. The chapter members rallied together to donate books, provide financial support for their Field Day, and provide clothing for students in need. To help forge a deeper connection, we also enjoyed a pen pal program with the students!
Patriotism
Our chapter places flags on graves of National Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day and supports the Wreaths Across America Program. We give quilts and hygiene supplies to Fisher House in Tucson that supports military families. We continue to furnish coffee and treats for the USO at Sky Harbor Airport. We also support Disabled American Veterans, Arizona State Veterans Home and Military Assistance Mission with quilts and blankets. Lastly, we collect and mail books for Operation Paperback that active military can enjoy around the globe.
